Beginning in 1972, Chicago, Illinois native John Wayne Gacy killed 33 young males, burying most under his home. Although he usually lured his victims with the promise of construction work, he often dressed as his alter ego “Pogo the Clown” for parties. Rejecting his insanity defense, a jury found Gacy guilty in 1980, and he received 12 death.

Since 2008, the Crime Museum has been an educational resource on law enforcement, crime history, and forensic science, and supports museum exhibits and programming. According to the Crime Museum, Gacy was given a paint set while he was on death row in 1982. He subsequently created 2,000 works of art. Per Distractify, Gacy’s art is colorful and at times, personal. Several of his pieces are of his persona, “Pogo the clown” or self-portraits.
